Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive type of procedure utilizing a laparoscope, a telescoping rod and lens system connected to a video camera and a light. Our surgeon inserts the laparoscope into the pet through a tiny (less than 1 inch long) incision, fills the space with a little carbon dioxide to create workspace, and then performs the spay procedure.
Laparoscopy reduces the need for a large incision in the pet’s abdomen, meaning less risk of infection, shorter recovery time, shorter hospital stay and—most importantly—less pain. Laparoscopic surgery is a viable alternative for pet owners wishing for “human-level” surgical care for their pets, and spay surgical patients are great candidates for this type of procedure.
Prior to administering anesthesia, each pet is examined to detect any existing medical conditions that may endanger the pet’s health, and diagnostic tests may be recommended in order to get a more complete picture of the pet’s health to be sure the pet is a good candidate for anesthesia. We utilize a variety of pain control medications before, during and after surgery to ensure that your pet is as comfortable as possible. If you have questions or concerns regarding anesthesia or surgery for your pet, please talk to one of our staff members.
During surgery we use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment to ensure the health and safety of your pet. Parameters which may be measured include blood pressure, blood oxygen concentration, temperature, and ECG. Your pet will be under the watchful eyes of our surgeons and trained veterinary staff before, during and after the procedure.
Surgeries we do laparoscopically include:
- Biopsies
- Spays
- Exploratory procedures of the chest and abdomen
- Other non-invasive procedures
At Seven Oaks Pet Hospital, we are thrilled and proud to take this advanced approach to the next level. We are one of the only veterinary hospitals in the Sunshine State to offer single port laparoscopic spays.
What does this mean exactly? Our surgeons are able to spay your pet using only one incision, typically around the navel. That means fewer stitches and less time in the cone for your little one and peace of mind for you.
